Bolden (second left) was the pilot. Mission specialists were Steven A. Hawley (center), George D. Nelson (rear right), and Franklin R. Chang-Diaz (right). Payload specialists were Robert J. Cenker (left), representing RCA; and Bill Nelson (left rear), United States congressman from Florida. Bolden was the second African American shuttle pilot, Chang-Diaz this first Costa Rican-born astronaut, and Nelson the second sitting politician to fly to space.
