Zec (lat. Lepus) je sazvežđe južne hemisfere. Jedno je od 88 modernih sazvežđa, a nalazi se i među 48 originalnih Ptolomejevih sazvežđa. Nalazi se ispod sazvežđa Orion, i predstavlja zeca koga gone Orionovi psi (Veliki i Mali pas).
Zvezde
[uredi | uredi izvor]Najsjajnija zvezda, alfa Zeca ili Arneb (zec na arapskom) je stara, umiruća zvezda, deset puta masivnija od Sunca.[1] Beta Zeca (Nihal, „kamile“ na arapskom) je svetli džin udaljen oko 159 svetlosnih godina. Gama Zeca je višestruka zvezda koja se nalazi na 29 svetlosnih godina od Sunčevog sistema i pripada Sirijusovoj grupi zvezda. Zeta Zeca je specifična po tome što ima asteroidni pojas. R i T Zeca su promenljive zvezde tipa Mire.
Objekti dubokog neba
[uredi | uredi izvor]U Zecu se nalazi M79, slabo globularno jato. M79 se nalazi na neuobičajenom mestu — na južnoj hemisferi, suprotno od galaktičkog centra, dok se globularna jata normalno nalaze oko galaktičkog centra. Veruje se da potiče iz Patuljaste galaksije Veliki pas.
