Hans Gal (nem. Hans Gál; Brun am Gebirge, 5. avgust 1890 — 3. oktobar 1987) bio je austrijsko-britanski kompozitor, učitelj i autor.

Biografija[uredi | uredi izvor]

Rođen je 5. avgusta 1890. u Brun am Gebipge, u jevrejskoj porodici, kao sin lekara Josefa Gala. Godine 1909. njegov učitelj klavira Ričard Robert (koji je takođe predavao Rudolfu Serkinu) imenovao je Gala za učitelja kada je postao direktor novog bečkog konzervatorijuma. Od 1909. do 1913. godine, Gal je studirao istoriju muzike na Univerzitetu u Beču kod istoričara muzike Gvida Adlera, koji je objavio Galovu doktorsku disertaciju o stilu Ludviga van Betovena u svom Studien zur Musikwissenschaft. Od 1909. do 1911. godine, Gal je pohađao privatne časove kompozicije kod bliskog prijatelja Johanesa Bramsa, sa kojim je kasnije uredio deset tomova kompletnog izdanja Bramsovih dela u izdanju Breitkopf & Härtel 1926. godine. Profesor mu je postao „duhovni otac”.[1]

Godine 1915. bio je prvi dobitnik nove austrijske državne nagrade za svoju prvu simfoniju, mada je kasnije odbacio ovo delo i njegove naslednike, kao i veliki broj do tada komponovanih dela.[2] Tokom Prvog svetskog rata službovao je u Srbiji, Karpatima i Italiji. Iz rata se vratio sa završenom operom Der Arzt der Sobeide, koja je izvedena u Vroclavu 1919. godine pod dirigentskim vodstvom Julijusa Pruvera.

Posle Prvog svetskog rata politička situacija u Austriji bila je izuzetno teška, pogoršana odbeglom inflacijom. Gal je imenovan za (u početku neplaćeno) mesto lektora za teoriju muzike na Univerzitetu u Beču (mesto koje je nekada zauzimao Anton Brukner). Uprkos finansijskim poteškoćama, oženio se Hanom Šik.[3] Njegova druga opera, Die heilige Ente, premijerno je izvedena u Diseldorfu aprila 1923. i izvedena je sa kontinuiranim uspehom u 20 pozorišta. Zajedno sa njegovom trećom operom Das Lied der Nacht uspostavila je njegovu širu reputaciju. Godine 1928. osvojio je stogodišnju nagradu Columbia Schubert za svoju Sinfonietta, a kasnije je vratio svoju prvu simfoniju. Sledeće godine, uz podršku muzičara kao što su Vilhelm Furtvangler, Fric Buš i Rihard Štraus, imenovan je za direktora konzervatorijuma u Majncu. Sledeće tri godine bile su među najsrećnijim i najproduktivnijim u njegovom životu.[4][5][6]

Drugi svetski rat i kasniji život[uredi | uredi izvor]

Uspon nacionalsocijalističke nemačke radničke partije naglo je prekinula Galovu karijeru u Majncu zbog njegovog jevrejskog porekla. Kada su nacisti preuzeli Majnc u martu 1933. godine, odmah je otpušten sa svoje funkcije, a izvođenje i objavljivanje njegovih dela u Nemačkoj bilo je zabranjeno.[7] Njegova četvrta opera, Die beiden Klaas, koja je trebala imati dvostruku premijeru u Drezdenu i Hamburgu, otkazana je i komad nije izveden sve dok prevod na engleskom jeziku nije predstavila opera Jork 1990.[8][9] On i njegova porodica vratili su se u Beč, ali tamo je već bila očigledna senka nemačkog rajha i on nije našao stalni položaj.

Odmah posle Anšlusa 1938. godine, Gal je pobegao u London, sa namerom da emigrira u Sjedinjene Američke Države, ali ostao je u Britaniji, gde je upoznao muzičara i naučnika Donalda Fransisa Tovija, koji ga je pozvao da dođe u Edinburg, gde je Tove predavao na univerzitetu. Nije bilo stalnih polova za profesore, ali Tovi mu je našao posao krajem 1938. godine, a kada je izbio rat 1939. Gala su trajno prebacili u Edinburg. Godine 1940. interniran je kao neprijatelj[10] u kampu blizu Liverpula i centralnog kampa u Daglasu, ostrvo Men, od maja do septembra.[11][12]

Nakon puštanja vratio se u Edinburg, gde je ostao do kraja života. Komponovao je sve vreme, objavljujući svoju drugu simfoniju 1942. Postao je predavač muzičkog obrazovanja na Univerzitetu u Edinburgu 1945. godine, gde je predavao do penzionisanja 1960.[13]

U Edinburgu je bio uvaženi član lokalne muzičke scene i jedan od osnivača Međunarodnog festivala u Edinburgu 1947. godine. Njegova kasnija odlikovanja uključuju Veliku austrijsku državnu nagradu za muziku (1957),[14] imenovanje za oficira reda Britanskog carstva (1964)[15] i austrijski krst časti za nauku i umetnost, 1. klasa (1971).[16]

Preminuo je u Edinburgu 3. oktobra 1987.

Galov stil je ukorenjen u austrijsko-nemačkoj muzičkoj tradiciji, ali od ranih 1920-ih razvio je svoj muzički jezik, kojem je ostao veran tokom svoje duge karijere. Nikada nije sledio preovlađujuću modu, niti je napustio veru u važnost tonaliteta.[17] Iako se njegov stil ne može izvesti ni iz jednog uticaja, ipak se mogu identifikovati određeni afiniteti, posebno sa bečkim kompozitorima iz 18. veka čija su bistrina, plastičnost i razigrani humor osnovni sastojci. Njegova dela kombinuju romantični intenzitet sa emocionalnom uzdržanošću, a hromatske harmonije i prošireni tonalitet predserijskih ranih modernih sa Šubertovom ljubavlju prema melodiji, integrisanom u višeglasnu teksturu koja potiče iz njegovog celoživotnog angažmana sa delima Johana Sebastijana Baha. Njegov rad je bio značajan: preko 150 objavljenih dela u gotovo svim žanrovima, uključujući, pored njegove četiri opere,[18] četiri simfonije, četiri gudačka kvarteta, dve velike kantate sa orkestrom, druga orkestralna dela, kamernu muziku, setove 24 preludija i 24 fuge za klavir i vokalna dela raznih vrsta.[19]

Posleratno zanemarivanje[uredi | uredi izvor]

Galova muzika nastavila je redovno da se koncertira u godinama neposredno posle Drugog svetskog rata zahvaljujući zastupanju kolega poput Rudolfa Švarca i Ota Šmitgena. Kako su godine prolazile, a Galovi advokati prestali da rade, njegova muzika je gotovo potpuno zanemarena. Ovaj proces je ubrzan promenom programske politike BBC-a: od 1960-ih nadalje, nacionalni emiter je izričito favorizovao muziku iz avangardnih ili dodekafonijskih škola.

Početkom 21. veka zaživelo je interesovanje za Galovu muziku. Diskografija sada uključuje četiri simfonije (Kenet Vuds i Orkestar labuda), kompletnu klavirsku muziku (Leon Makaoli), kompletne gudačke triose, koncerte i koncertino za violinu, violončelo i klavir (solisti Anet-Barbara Vogel, Metju Šarp i Sara Bet Brigs sa dirigentom Kenetom Vudsom, engleskim simfonijskim orkestrom i kraljevskom severnom sinfonijom), koncert za violončelo (Antonio Meneses) i kompletni gudački kvarteti (edinburški kvartet), kao i niz kamernih dela. Nedavna izdanja uključuju prvu od Galovih opera, Das Lied der Nacht. Gal je bio kompozitor nedelje BBC Radija 3, maja 2014.[20]
