Delfin je malo sazvežđe severne hemisfere, jedno od 88 savremenih sazvežđa i jedno od 48 originalnih Ptolomejevih sazvežđa. Dva su mita povezana sa Delfinom. Po prvom, u pitanju je delfin koji je pomogao Posejdonu da osvoji Nereidu Anfitritu. Po drugom, radi se o delfinu koji je spasao život pesniku Arionu sa Lezbosa.
Zvezde

Italijanski astronom Nikolo Kačatore je nazvao dve najsjajnije zvezde u Delfinu po svom imenu napisanom unazad: alfu Sualocin a betu Rotanev (od latinizovanog oblika svog imena Nicolaus Venator, Venator na latinskom i Cacciatore na italijanskom znače „lovac“). Najsjajnija zvezda Delfina je beta, magnitude 3,63, dok alfa ima magnitudu 3,77. Alfa se sastoji od 7 komponenti označenih od A do G, od toga su A i G fizički dvojne dok B, C, D, E i F samo vizuelno pripadaju ovom sistemu. Ro Orla je zvezda koja je pripadala sazvežđu Orla, ali je 1992. godine prešla granicu među sazvežđima i ušla u Delfin.
Nova Delphini 2013 (Nova Delfina 2013) je nova koju je 14. avgusta 2013. godine otkrio japanski astronom-amater Koiči Itagaki. Pre eksplozije, Nova Delfina je najverovatnije bila zvezda 17. magnitude, što znači da se njen sjaj povećao 25000 puta. U pitanju je klasična nova — binarni sistem u kome materijal sa hladnijeg džina prelazi na topliji beli patuljak na kome se skuplja sve dok ne dođe do termonuklearne reakcije.[2] Magnituda Nove Delfina je do 16. avgusta porasla na oko 5, čime je postala vidljiva golim okom.[3]
Objekti dubokog neba
[uredi | uredi izvor]U Delfinu se nalazi nekoliko zanimljivih objekata dubokog neba. Prisutne su dve male plave planetatne magline — NGC 6891 (u blizini ro Orla) i NGC 6905. NGC 6934 je veliko globularno jato u blizini epsilon Delfina. NGC 7006 je udaljeno, sferno i relativno svetlo globularno jato u blizini gama Delfina.
